Department for Transport: National Street Gazetteer

A common problem on Britain’s streets is the apparent lack of coordination and cooperation between companies undertaking streetwork. In light of this the Department of Transport engaged Methods to assist in establishing a national street gazetteer to help solve the problem.

Our approach

Methods was engaged to provide a number of services to the DfT including an extensive review of products on the market, from vendors such as Moleseye and Holeworld, which are starting to make an impact in the area of registers of underground assets. An essential component of the assignment was the development and delivery of a demonstrator or prototype solution, using initially the Raster map system already licensed to the DfT.

Delivering results

The development of the demonstrator will enable the DfT to evaluate the feasibility of having a single web-site to enable service providers (local councils, utilities etc) to search for a single “street” and to pass that information to their own systems, thereby providing much needed continuity and coordination.
