Methods uncovers demand for mobile computing in London hospitals

Methods Consulting, working with specialist health consultancy HealthSystems, has uncovered a clear preference amongst clinicians for mobile computing devices – demand that is not currently supported by the existing IT infrastructure in the great majority of the London hospitals.

The findings, which will be presented at the Healthcare 2008 Conference in Harrogate on 21 April, emerged from a comprehensive study, on behalf of the IT Directors of the London Acute Hospitals, on current and future Ward based computing. The study comprised 4 stages:

1. Literature Search – reviewing 200 published papers on ward based computing for lessons learned and best practice.
2. Technology Review – of future development underway and/or planned by system suppliers.
3. Infrastructure Survey – to understand current Ward based computing and networks in use across the 32 London Acute Trusts.
4. Clinician Survey – to capture the views of clinical staff on the current and future use of ward based computing, and types of device that should be used.
